Confirm what is flying

Small flies near a plant are not automatically fungus gnats. Note where they gather, whether they emerge when the pot is disturbed and what the adults look like. Minnesota Extension describes fungus gnats as associated with damp growing media and notes that sticky cards help detect adults. Put the observation beside the plant name. A fly near a fruit bowl and a fly rising from compost may require completely different investigations.

Audit moisture without punishing the plant

Check how the medium behaves below its surface, whether the pot drains and whether water collects in its cover. Allowing a suitable surface drying period may help, but the acceptable degree of drying depends on the species. Do not turn a moisture-loving plant into a drought experiment. Remove fallen material and write down the actual watering decision you made, including why you waited or watered.

Measure improvement with observations

Use a consistent inspection routine rather than judging the problem by the most irritating fly of the day. Record adult activity, medium condition and any action taken. Sticky cards alone do not resolve every stage of an infestation. If management is needed, consult the extension guidance and use only an appropriate locally authorized product according to its label. A change that harms the plant is not a useful shortcut to an empty room. Keep detection cards positioned so children, pets and routine handling will not accidentally come into contact with them.
