Find the growing container
A gifted poinsettia often arrives inside paper, foil or a cover that conceals the pot. Unwrap enough to identify the growing container and see whether it drains. Read the plant label and RHS growing guidance before deciding its permanent position. Its colorful display is a reason to enjoy it, but not a reason to ignore the root environment. Keep the care information with the plant instead of allowing it to disappear with the packaging.
Choose a place for an ordinary weekday
Consider light, temperature and access for watering as well as the festive display. Avoid a position where the plant is repeatedly knocked, overheated by nearby equipment or left inaccessible behind decorations. Check its suitability for the household and place it appropriately around children and animals. If you move it temporarily for a meal or photograph, have a simple return routine. The attractive location should also be a place where someone notices what the pot needs.
Decide what happens after the display
A poinsettia can become a longer care project, but keeping it and bringing it back into color are separate choices. Consult the detailed species guidance before promising another precisely timed winter display. If you retain it, write a short note recording its identity, current condition and next care stage. If it is passed to another owner, give them that information. A realistic decision after flowering is more useful than leaving an unexamined pot behind the curtains until next season.
